At our June meeting Sharon and Noreen facilitated a traditional mass workshop. We learnt about the importance of mechanics, balance, harmony, scale and proportion in doing traditional designs and then created our own asymmetrical designs.
On the bench we had “my choice” and “horticultural stem/bloom”.
asymmetrical massed designs.
Josie Brennan of FASV and the Vermont Floral Art Group was our guest demonstrator at our May meeting.
Josie had made her own intricate armature by bending and twisting paper covered Aluminium wire which she then decorated with beautiful orchids inside test tubes. Next she used a cylindrical floral wire mesh covered in white wool as a container and placed a few delicate flowers to make a stunning contemporary design. Then a small oasis container was covered with beautiful white flowers and silver foliage and 2 battery operated candles to make a lovely table centre-piece. Lastly she made a pot et fleur with cyclamen plants and succulents in a container covered with bark which can be used as an ideal gift.
All her creations were greatly admired by all present and we thank Josie for the huge effort she put in as preparation for the demo.
The bench was filled with the Modern designs(that we all learnt at our last meeting).
At the Waverley Garden Club birthday meeting on the 3rd of May, Noreen and Elizabeth did a beautiful floral demonstration. Noreen was dressed up as Hyacinth Bucket and Elizabeth was her friendly neighbour who was invited to her tea party. They made a beautiful autumn design, floral cup cakes, floral birthday cake, a trifle, fish course and a candelabra to decorate the table.
At this meeting our president Noreen Donovan was awarded the Royal Horticultural Society’s John Pascoe Fawkner Award for her outstanding contribution to horticulture and floral art over so many years. This Gold award is the highest honour that the RHSV presents and Noreen is a very worthy recipient. Congratulations Noreen!
We were very fortunate to have our very own judges Noreen and Sharon teach us how to do Modern Designs. We all enjoyed making bold, tailored basic Modern arrangements as shown below. A big ‘thank you’ to Sharon and Noreen for sharing their knowledge and expertise with us so willingly.
We started the new year with a skills workshop for our February meeting. Noreen showed us how to fill a folded chicken wire mesh with various horticultural material and use it to enhance a floral design. Linda showed us how to pass a flax leaf through slits made in bird of paradise leaves. She also showed us so many different ways to cover test tubes used in floral art. Noreen also showed us how to do threading and stringing of orchids and attach to wool covered collars in floral arrangements. We all had fun making our own designs incorporating these techniques. A big thank you to Linda and Noreen for sharing their talents with us.
We were delighted to have guests from Box Hill, Vermont and Ashburton floral art groups for out March meeting. Linda, Alicja and Jenny prepared mystery boxes of various materials for the impose titled “Guess Where”. Noreen made an African design, Sharon did an European design and Elizabeth made an Australian design to impress us all.
2012 has been a very busy and eventful year for Waverley Floral Art Group members as it was our Golden Jubilee year. In August we had our 50th anniversary show with 74 competitive floral art entries on show (for photos see the Camellia Show 2012 tab).
We had our 50th Annual General Meeting on the 21st of August when we welcomed Sharon Cunningham as a new committee member. Jo White became the new treasurer as Barbara and Maree left the committee this year due to ill health. A big thank you to Alicja, Barb and Maree for their dedication over the years. After the AGM, our president Noreen surprised us with ‘lucky dip’ style kits and we all had fun making up all kinds of floral creations with what ever we had in the kit (see photos at the bottom of this post).
We all enjoyed the demonstration given by Patricia Insall from the Brighton Floral Art Group at the September meeting. She showed us how to make an old-fashioned ‘tussy mussy’ amongst other beautiful designs (see photos below).
In October, instead of our normal meeting we had our gala luncheon at the Masonic Hall to celebrate our 50th Birthday in style. Photos and the details of this event can be seen in the top menu tab under the title Golden Anniversary.
From August to November, most of our members were busy representing us at various shows in Victoria and demonstrating floral art at various events. Noreen, Elizabeth, Ria, Linda, Jenny, Alicja, Sharon, Elsie, CheGon, Bronwyn, Haeztra and Rob have taken part in Box Hill Floral art Show, Glen Iris Spring Show, Ferny Creek Spring Festival, Preston Spring Show, Ivanhoe Spring Show, Iris Society Show, Rose Society Show, Croydon Spring Show and the Latrobe Rose and Garden Show and won many prizes, trophies and ribbons. In the Box Hill show, Waverley floral art group members had 22 entries and at the Glen Iris Show, Jenny had a record of 8 entries and won 7 first prizes, a second prize and a blue ribbon. The photos of these competitions are in the ‘photo gallery’ tab and the ‘Other Shows 2008-2012’ tab. Congratulations and well done !
November meeting was our last meeting for 2012. We all had fun making Xmas decorations and enjoyed a lovely supper and KrisKringle. Photos of the Christmas bench arrangements are placed in the Christmas Photo Gallery.
Many thanks to Nicole Gibson for leading us through a contemporary workshop at our July meeting. In spite of the cold weather, most of us turned up and enjoyed making a contemporary horizontal structural design. Some of the designs and the bench work are shown below.

A big thank you to our own members Jenny and Rosie for teaching us the techniques for making structures in wired work. They showed us how to use fine wires to tatami little structures using small sticks of willow, bamboo and silver birch. We all had fun using these structures in corsages and buttonholes.
Some of the wired work pieces produced and the bench work are shown in the slideshow below.

At our May meeting we had the pleasure of watching Meg Vernon from Box Hill Floral Art Group demonstrate 5 designs inspired by the work of international floral artist Marie-Francoise Deprez when she visited ‘L’amour des Fleurs’ in Queensland. We are thankful to Meg for her beautiful creations shown below.
For bench work we had “Still Life” and “Wrist Corsage” for wired work. (see below for photos).
At our April meeting we were privileged to watch Lara Telford from Sogetsu School of Ikebana demonstrate several beautiful Ikebana arrangements. She created basic and free style arrangements and showed us the importance of Composition and Line, Colour and Mass in an Ikebana design. We were enthralled by her creativity and artistic talents and are deeply grateful to Lara. Her arrangements are shown below.
