Home of the Waverley Garden Club Inc. Floral Art Group
At our March meeting we had members from other Floral art groups visit us for an “Impose – Guess What?” night. Noreen made mystery boxes of interesting material and we all watched as Linda, Ria and Jenny put together a very creative design as shown below. At this meeting, Judy, the president of the Waverley Garden club presented Maree Hannan and Elizabeth Oberin with Life Membership badges in recognition of their hard work over several years as Treasurer and Secretary of the floral art group respectively.

We started our Golden Jubilee year with a skills night on February 21.
Thanks to Noreen, we all learnt how to make an Avant-Garde wreath with a contemporary twist. Our bench was full with lots of entries and the new horticultural item “Something from your garden” seemed to be very popular. The slide show below show all the bench items and some of the Avant-Guarde wreaths we made on the day.
Welcome to our Golden Anniversary year! Our president Noreen and the committee members are all excited about our 50th Birthday year and they are planning a special birthday luncheon on Saturday 13th October.
In our schedule for this year there are a few workshops planned and we have had interest from non members and members of other floral art groups (see the schedule 2012 tab on the menu).
We welcome all non members to these workshops and the cost is only $10.00. You will have to pay for any kits/supplies separately. On the 21st February for our first meeting, we will have a skills night workshop and all are welcome. Bring along a few flowers and foliage.
Congratulations to Noreen Donovan who is now an accredited horticultural judge. A fortnight ago she was awarded the certificate as she became a professional horticultural judge (in addition to being a floral art judge). Well done Noreen, we’re all proud of you!
This year for the bench, we have introduced a new item called “something from your garden” as Noreen can now judge that and give us the tips about exhibiting from a horticultural angle. Every entry on the bench (floral art and horticultural) will get a raffle ticket which will go into a draw at the end of the year and you could be a winner!
Congratulations also to Jenny Peiper for winning the People’s choice award of the 2011 Apack FlowerGoss Online Cup Competition. The theme for the competition was ’40th Wedding Anniversary dinner’. Jenny used the heart shaped red Apack bouquet holders and made this beautiful Anniversary design for a foyer shown below. She won an Apack voucher for $100 which she has kindly donated to our floral art group and we’ll be using it to celebrate our golden anniversary. Well done and thank you Jenny.
Our president Noreen along with CheGon and Haeztra were invited to demonstrate at the October monthly meeting of the Waverley Garden Club. Noreen did a modern arrangement with red waratahs and bark followed by an European arrangement with roses, lotus pods and dried palm leaves. This slideshow requires JavaScript.
Chegon used a pumpkin as a container and filled it with yellow proteas, leucodendrons, pink boronias and ferns. She also did a parallel arrangement with red anthuriums and heliconias on a base covered with geralton wax and fragrant geranium leaves.
Haeztra made a crescent shape by weaving cordyline foliage and added red camellias and begonias. For the second design she had covered 2 round wooden containers with Nori sheets and placed pink sim carnations in between them and on top.
Vermont Floral Art Group had invited our president Noreen and committee member Linda as demonstrators for their monthly November meeting. Noreen used green Midellino sticks in a loop with green Hosta leaves and white lilies in one design. Next she covered a silver structure with red roses and anthuriums. For the third design she used pink Midellino sticks woven through a mesh and placed an oasis ball covered with leaves and decorative beeds. A few purple orchids and pink gerberas completed the stunning design.
Linda made a horticultural handbag, hat, necklace, shoes and a cute puppy so creatively.
The slide show below shows some of the designs.
On the 18th of October 2011 members of Ashburton, BoxHill, Brighton and Vermont floral art groups joined us to celebrate our 49th birthday. We are very grateful to Nicole Gibson, head of Marjory Milner School of Floristry who delighted us all with a wonderful demonstration using amazing structures.

On the 16th of August we had our Annual General Meeting which was well attended. We are grateful to Waverley Garden Club member Nancy Gray for chairing our meeting. We welcomed Jo White as a new committee member. After the AGM, our president Noreen gave us cane kits and Haeztra showed us how to make twirly cane structures with them which could be used for ‘Swirl and Twirl’ entries at the upcoming show.
At our September meeting Jenny and Linda introduced us to an international guest ‘Dolly Parton’. It was a fun filled floral surprise as they showed us a horticultural frock complete with belts, handbags, necklaces, earrings, bracelet, shoes and a parasol accompanied by a cat and a dog.
The images below show the frock, the cat, necklace and a pair of shoes along with some of the bench work entitled ‘Using a Structure’ and ‘Decorated Parcel of wired work’ at the September meeting.

On a cold winter’s night most of us gathered to learn about staging entries for the Camellia Show.
Some of us put up entries on the bench for items from the show schedule and Wendy gave us creative criticism so that we can improve on them. Noreen, Barb and Jenny demonstrated some other items from the schedule and gave us lots of valuable tips and advice.
Check out the Camellia Festival 2011 page on this website for the show schedule.

Our president Noreen led us through a contemporary workshop at our June meeting. In spite of the cold weather most of us turned up and learnt new techniques. Some of the designs are shown below.
We were very fortunate to have 3 very talented ladies from the Vermont Floral Art Group demonstrate at our May meeting. We are thankful to Myrna, Marion and Barbara who thrilled us all by their floral creations. For bench work we had “Mother’s day posy in a bridie holder” and “Decorated Bottle” for wired work. (see below for photos).
On the 6th of May we had the Waverley Garden Club’s 50th birthday celebration dinner. Our president Noreen did a great job creating two magnificent pedestal arrangements for the hall while our secreatary Elizabeth made pretty table napkin holders in the shape of a leaf. The floral centre pieces made with sticks and candles were very stylish and an enjoyable night was had by all. (Pictures are up on the Photo Gallery page).
Congratulations to our very own Beth who was awarded the 2011 Minister of Health award for 10 years of Volunteer work. She is a worthy recipient of this unique award for her tireless work at the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre.
At our next meeting Noreen will show us a contemporary design done by Hitomi Gilliam at the ‘Floral Rendezvous 2010’ workshop in Perth last September. We will learn new techniques taught by Hitomi. Please bring the following for this workshop.
